Consumers found time this U.S. Thanksgiving Day to squeeze in a lot more holiday shopping online, in between spending time with family, watching football and feasting on turkey.
EBay Inc's PayPal online payments division said that on Thanksgiving day, its volume of payments jumped 25 percent from a year ago. Last year on Thanksgiving day, PayPal said it notched a 15 percent increase from a year earlier.
PayPal processes transactions for a wide range of online retail sites as well as purchases on eBay.
Walmart.com, the online division of Wal-Mart Stores Inc, said it had an "incredibly strong day" as customers shopped its Thanksgiving day online-only specials.
Some of the top sellers among its online-only deals included a Samsung 46-inch LCD television, a KidKraft Savannah dollhouse and a Bissell steam mop hard floor cleaner.
Holiday sales online are expected to rise 3 percent this year after a 3 percent decline in 2008, when shoppers cut spending sharply in the wake of a global financial crisis. Investors are watching closely as Walmart.com takes on industry leader Amazon.com Inc with steep discounts on everything from toys to books.
Shoebuy.com said that on Thanksgiving day, traffic on its site steadily built throughout the day, with late afternoon and evening being its busiest time.
But consumers also continued to seek online deals on Black Friday, the day after Thanksgiving when retailers offer their doors early and offer limited-time only deals.

Windows 7’s overall superiority to Windows Vista has translated into the latest iteration of the Windows client, leaving its predecessor in the dirt in terms of commercial success as well. Windows 7 RTM has been embraced by over three times more customers compared to Vista RTM in the first week on the market alone. Market research company, The NPD Group, indicated that initial sales of the boxed, retail copies of Windows 7 dwarfed those of Vista’s. In the first few days on the U.S. market, Microsoft sold 234% more boxed copies than Vista, noted The NPD Group.
“Microsoft’s program of early low-cost pre-sales, high visibility marketing, and aggressive deals helped make the Windows 7 software launch successful,” revealed Stephen Baker, vice president of industry analysis at NPD. “In a slow environment for packaged software Windows 7 brought a large number of customers into the software aisles.”
Microsoft executives, including Chief Executive Officer Steve Ballmer, had revealed during visits in Taipei and Japan that Windows 7 sales were strong. However, Microsoft has so far failed to confirm the data provided by The NPD Group. At the same time, the Redmond company has yet to make public any official sales figures associated with Windows 7.
Still, although it outsold Vista by 234%, Windows 7 delivered a smaller boost in actual revenue. Statistics provided through the NPD’s weekly tracking service, reveal that actual Windows 7 dollar sales were only 82% higher than Vista. This can be explained through not only the consistent discounts on pre-sales that Microsoft offered, but also through less sales of the Ultimate flavor of Windows 7, as Microsoft worked to focus consumers more on the Home Premium and Professional editions.
And, as was expected, the launch of Windows 7 also contributed to pushing sales of Windows PCs, although to a lesser degree than Vista did starting with the end of January 2007. Sales of Windows 7 computers were 6% less than those of Vista machines, in a maker that reveals an overall 49% year-over-year units growth, and 95% over the week prior to Windows 7’s general availability on October 22nd, 2009.
“A combination of factors impacted Windows 7 PC sales at the outset, but the trajectory of overall PC sales is very strong leading into the holiday season,” added Baker. “Vista had a slight advantage at launch, as January traditionally has a bigger sales footprint than October. The other hurdle Windows 7 faced was sales of PCs with older operating systems (XP and Vista) were high, making up 20 percent of sales during the Windows 7 launch, compared to just 6 percent of older operating sales during Vista’s launch week." YouTube Automatic Video Captions
YouTube is readying the launch of an automatic captions feature for the site's videos. This and a new automatic caption timing feature will make it easier for anyone to add captions to their videos, and will enable anyone to read captions on more videos.
"Since the original launch of captions in our products, we’ve been happy to see growth in the number of captioned videos on our services, which now number in the hundreds of thousands," says software engineer Ken Harrenstien, who helped design YouTube's caption features. "This suggests that more and more people are becoming aware of how useful captions can be. As we’ve explained in the past, captions not only help the deaf and hearing impaired, but with machine translation, they also enable people around the world to access video content in any of 51 languages. Captions can also improve search and even enable users to jump to the exact parts of the videos they're looking for." (emphasis added)
"However, like everything YouTube does, captions face a tremendous challenge of scale," adds Harrenstein. "Every minute, 20 hours of video are uploaded. How can we expect every video owner to spend the time and effort necessary to add captions to their videos? Even with all of the captioning support already available on YouTube, the majority of user-generated video content online is still inaccessible to people like me."
To help with this problem, Google has utilized its automatic speech recognition technology, and integrated it with YouTube's caption system to offer automatic captions. The captions generated by this will not always be perfect, as you can imagine, but as Harrenstein notes, even when they are flawed, they can still be quite helpful. He also says the technology will continue to improve over time.
YouTube is also launching automatic caption timing to make it easier to create captions manually. With this feature, users can just create a simple text file with all the words in the video, and Google will use the automatic speech recognition technology to figure out where the words are spoken and create the captions for the video. That's pretty useful stuff.
Google says both new features will be available in English by the end of the week. At first, auto-caps will only be visible on a few partner channels, so they can get feedback. Eventually, they will roll out more broadly.

The progress should be evident right from the beginning. A post on the LatLong Blog states, "We know that waiting for a program to start-up can be really frustrating, so we improved our start-up time by 25%."
Tweaks in terms of memory utilization and shaders from that point on have also been made. All in all, the post promises, "we can show more buildings, layers, and user content," and you'll get "[a] faster, smoother experience when you're flying around the globe."
Since issues pertaining to speed can definitely be a stumbling block to adoption, version 5.1 of Google Earth could succeed at attracting new users. It might even be well positioned to make its debut in a lot of schools, if the old clunkers in computer labs weren't capable of running it before.
Regardless, this represents a nice treat for existing Google Earth fans. Have fun exploring the world at a faster pace.
